Uniform size of the birds is a major consideration in raising and marketing chicks for breeding. When a flock is of uniform size and weight, all its members reach the laying stage at the same time, saving nutrition, care and supervision costs. Such a flock can get an excellent price, whereas a mix of thin and fat chicks in the same flock lowers the price of the entire flock.
Juran, in cooperation with scientists at the Agricultural Research Organization's Department of Agricultural Engineering, has developed a system for the sorting and vaccination of live fowl, enabling breeders to produce and market flocks of uniform size.
Conveyed by an overhead monorail for a minimal time, the chicks are automatically weighed by a precise electronic weighing system, and sorted into coops according to weight. System capacity of approximately 3,000 birds per hour represents savings of up to six workers, enabling quick ROI (Return On Investment) - the system pays for itself within just 12-14 months.
